What is the Vcruntime140.dll file?

It is an important part of the Windows Visual C++ Runtime library that allows developers of programs for Windows to interact with the operating system.

Maybe programs and games are written in the C++ language and instead of them writing the same code over and over again these libraries contain commonly used functions.

This keeps the amount of code written down to a minimum, ensuring efficient use of the space on your hard drive/s.

Many of the popular video game launchers use this file to provide its functionality including Steam and Origin.

Behind those behemoth pieces of software are a huge number of other DLLs including the Steam_api.dll and Lame_enc.dll.

Without the file, you may randomly start seeing “the code execution cannot proceed because vcruntime140.dll was not found” appear when trying to launch these programs.

Another popular program that requires this DLL is the Dolphin Emulator used to play GameCube and Wii games on your PC.

You can attempt this yourself very easily by doing the following:

  • Open the Start menu and launch the “Run” program by searching for it.
